Extra support with Scribbles and friends

🌱 Support & Guidance for Parents, Educators & Allied heath specialists.

Scribbles the Distracta Squirrel was created with the understanding that many children experience the world with busy minds, big feelings, and curious bodies.

This page is designed to support parents, educators, occupational therapists, and allied health professionals who wish to use the book as a gentle tool to encourage emotional awareness, self-regulation, and confidence.

🐿️ About the Approach

The story and characters are intentionally designed to:

  • Normalise distraction and big thoughts
  • Encourage self-acceptance rather than “fixing” behaviour
  • Provide language for internal experiences
  • Support calm connection through shared reading

The book does not aim to diagnose or treat. Instead, it offers a safe starting point for conversations, reflection, and emotional literacy.

🧠 Key Skills the Book May Support

Many adults may find the book helpful when supporting children with:

  • Attention and focus challenges
  • Emotional regulation
  • Anxiety or overwhelm
  • Transitions and changes
  • Building confidence and self-trust

These themes are explored through story, imagery, and character experiences rather than instruction or correction.

🪵 Ideas for Using the Book in Practice

For Occupational Therapists & Allied Health Professionals:

  • Use during rapport building sessions
  • Invite the child to identify which character they feel like today
  • Pause during the story to ask reflective questions
  • Pair with calming strategies or sensory activities

For Educators:

  • Read during group time or calm-down transitions
  • Use characters as emotional reference points
  • Include in quiet corners or wellbeing spaces
  • Encourage drawing or storytelling extensions

For Parents & Caregivers:

  • Read together during relaxed moments
  • Revisit favourite pages during challenging days
  • Use the characters as shared language (“Are you feeling a bit like Scribbles today?”)

💬 Reflection Prompts (Optional)

These gentle prompts can be used during or after reading:

“What do you think Scribbles is feeling right now?”

“Have you ever felt like your thoughts were moving too fast?”

“What helps Scribbles feel better?”

“What helps you feel calm or brave?”

There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is connection, not completion.

🌈 A Note on Neurodiversity

This book was created with deep respect for neurodivergent children and families.

Differences in attention, processing, and regulation are treated as variations of being human, not problems to be solved. The intention is to help children feel seen, understood, and valued exactly as they are.
